Dive Brief:
- NRG Energy announced on Tuesday it is expanding its retail electricity business, NRG Residential Solutions, to Washington, D.C. and parts of Maryland, including Baltimore and Annapolis.
- NRG will offer its retail services to customers of Pepco, Delmarva Power and Baltimore Gas & Electric.
- NRG Residential Solutions launched last month in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Dive Insight:
D.C. and Maryland both deregulated their electricity markets over 10 years ago but "nearly 85% and 74% of residents, respectively, are still buying their power the old fashioned way—from their utility company," said James Steffes, president of NRG Northeast Retail. The expansion to D.C. and Maryland is part of NRG's retail game plan to penetrate deregulated markets across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
