Job Description

As the part of the Research Department, the incumbent will be responsible for developing first-in-class research content on topics such as: future utility business models, the role of distributed energy resources (DERs) as part of non-wire alternatives, DER valuation methodologies, and grid modernization activities and best practices that provide research intelligence to SEPA’s membership, external stakeholders, and internal staff.


Research Content and Project Management

  • Manage various research projects including reports, case studies, surveys, white papers, briefings, and other written materials; includes creating timelines, researching/writing/editing content, tracking progress, developing and managing a budget, deliverable release, and evaluating project success.

  • Coordinate research projects with internal and external subject matter experts and serve as internal subject matter expert as appropriate.

  • Prepare and review technical background material for presentations, conference sessions, workshops, website, educational events and other content for use by internal staff and SEPA’s members.


Peer-to-peer Exchange

  • Coordinate research responses to technical inquiries from internal staff and external stakeholders, including media, general public, utility and DER industry members.

  • Represent organization at conferences, meetings, and workshops, and deliver presentations on behalf of the organization; approximately 10-15% travel to off-site events is expected.

  • Identify topics to be discussed at SEPA educational forums – including conferences, fact finding missions, webinars and workshops – and coordinate with speakers for those forums.


Team Building and Strategy

  • Help develop and mentor mid-level and junior team members

  • Key influencer of department-specific business development and strategy, including development of new products, services, and research opportunities for the research team

  • Manage relationships with SEPA’s strategic research partners



  • Four to ten years of professional experience in the energy industry and at least three years in electric power regulation, such as on state or federal regulatory agency staff or within a utility or third party regulatory affairs team.

  • Knowledge of renewable energy and/or distributed energy resource industries is preferred.

  • Writing skills, with the ability to translate technical information for a broader audience.

  • Interpersonal skills, with the capability of collaborating with many internal staff and external partners.

  • Undergraduate degree required with a preference in a related field. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
