Job Description

The City of Pittsburg seeks a UTILITY LINEWORKER for its Pittsburg Power Company.
Pittsburg Power Company ("PPC") conducts business in the City of Pittsburg and on Mare Island, Vallejo.  PPC is a publicly owned municipal utility company that provides electricity and natural gas services at Mare Island.  Though the utility is small compared to investor owned utilities, staff is available to work at a personal level to meet the needs of customers who range from residential to large commercial companies and entrepreneurs.
The Utility Lineworker performs a wide variety of maintenance, repair, testing and construction work on the electric distribution system, provides efficient and timely response to emergency operations as assigned; provides efficient customer service, and functions as a positive and cooperative team member.  This position is located on Mare Island in Vallejo, CA.  Incumbents perform more routine and less complex electrical duties in a training capacity.  The ideal candidate will have had experience in medium voltage electrical distribution systems.  The successful candidate will have opportunity to train for and learn the skill sets of the Utility Technician job classification for career development and growth.
The standard work hours are from 7:00am - 3:30pm but employees must be able to work standby shifts, after hours, holidays, and weekends to respond to outages, scheduled or emergency work.

Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Electrical systems construction and maintenance experience
  • Welding experience
  • Strong teamwork attitude and skills
  • Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe manner
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with staff and the public
  • Have relevant computer skills to use Microsoft Outlook and Word for electronic communication and to create/update a variety of reports and documents
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather and environmental conditions for extended periods of time
  • Eagerness to learn and develop career
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities
  • Ability to work standby shifts, after hours, weekends, and holidays


Education and/or Experience: The equivalent of a high school diploma and three (3) years of applicable experience in construction, maintenance, or related work. Experience in the electric or gas industry is desirable.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid class C California state driver's license.

Other Requirements: Physically and mentally capable of performing the functions of the job summarized in the Typical Tasks.


Knowledge of:

Basic practices, techniques and materials used in the maintenance, construction, mechanics, and repair; physical assets; safety requirements for the operation of trucks and other hand, power, and motorized equipment utilized in performing the assigned duties; basic occupational hazards and standard safety practices.


Ability to:

Understand and carry out a variety of oral and written instructions; learn Pittsburg Power Company and the City's operations, policies and procedures as they relate to assigned duties; learn the operations and maintenance of the utility's gas and electric distribution facilities; learn to operate a variety of light to heavy motorized and power equipment utilized in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Pittsburg Power Company's utility and the City's operations and facilities in a safe and effective manner; operate a variety of hand powered maintenance and construction equipment in a safe and effective manner; perform routine mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; maintain routine records and logs; communicate orally in an effective and tactful manner; provide courteous and positive customer service; perform assigned duties to include heavy and continuous physical labor in a safe and effective manner for self and others.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
