Job Description

Our Ideal Candidate: Excellent opportunity for a self-starting, highly motivated, safety conscious, team player with underground construction and heavy equipment maintenance skills to perform, but not limited to, fleet maintenance, underground construction, utility maintenance and welding activities involved with a district energy system. The successful candidate will spend 85% of the time working outdoors.

Position Summary:

Provides skilled and semi-skilled labor with little or no supervision in the performance of general utility work on the distribution system including driving and operating equipment, construction work, building and general maintenance work pertaining to the steam and chilled water distribution system.

Essentials:

  • Proficient in construction activity with experience in safe underground construction and fleet and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

  • Troubleshoot the essential functions of Distribution/HVAC including valves, traps, PRV’s, sounding, etc.

  • Be willing and able to work call-outs, overtime, rotating shifts, holidays and weekends at any Company location as needed. Be willing to carry Company cell phone when requested.

  • Quickly respond to emergency call outs and handle emergencies in a calm and professional manner.

  • Be able to inspect, investigate, repair and document steam and chilled water underground manholes and components. This work shall include review of all available documentation of the suspect piping systems.

  • Inspect Company vehicles prior to operation to maintain safe operation and avoid trouble and delays during scheduled work.

  • Report steam and chilled water leaks, damaged manhole castings or any other issue that may be a Company liability.

  • Notify Plant Operators prior to operating steam and chilled water valves.

  • Report damage or alterations to other utilities, damage to Company equipment or damage to properties of others to the Energy Infrastructure Manager; document on Company incident reports.

  • Monitor, gather and check materials needed for jobs and report any deficiencies to Energy Infrastructure Manager.

 

Qualifications

Requirements: Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: Must have at least four (4) years’ experience working in district energy or equivalent outside experience and posses a good working knowledge of and fully proficient in construction activity with four (4) years’ experience in underground construction and mechanical fleet repair.

Skills: fully proficient in at least one of the following specialty areas:

  • Heavy Equipment – must be fully capable of running and operating heavy construction equipment.

  • Distribution/HVAC – Good working knowledge of all distribution essential functions including, but not limited to valves, traps, steam and chilled water controls, etc. Must also possess the ability to troubleshoot and repair minor building HVAC problems.

Licensing: Valid Driver’s License and able to drive manual transmission vehicle.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires working outdoors in all weather environments including rain, snow, extreme cold, or high heat. This position requires operating and exposure to risk of operating heavy equipment such as: backhoes, panel vans, and dump trucks. Exposed to risks such as steam and chilled water leaks, excavation hazards particularly digs in the right of way and electrical burns/electrocution. Ability to perform physical duties such as lifting up to 80 lbs unassisted, walking, standing for extended periods of time, climbing, pulling, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, and bending.

  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in stressful or emergency situations such as when fixing a steam or chilled water leak. Job requires wear/use all protective equipment including, reflective traffic vests, hard hat, safety eye wear, safety shoes and other PPE as required; must be OSHA compliant.
