NEPPA is a regional trade association of publicly, consumer-owned utilities in the Northeast dedicated to uniting public utility professionals by advancing their knowledge, capabilities, and voice in the industry.
NEPPA’s members have entrusted the organization to provide and meet their safety and technical training needs since its incorporation in 1965. This is a responsibility that we are honored to have, we are excited to grow our team to support this mission as an integral part of its success.
The Northeast Public Power Association (NEPPA) has been entrusted by its members to provide the technical and safety training required to safely work on, near, and around energized electric distribution systems. To better serve our members, NEPPA is seeking to hire additional part-time trainers to support these initiatives.
Trainers regularly travel to our members’ headquarters to deliver training. Training may also be conducted on-site at NEPPA’s Training Center in Littleton, MA.
Essential Job Functions
The Technical and Safety Trainer is expected to:
- Teach adult students effectively on safety and technical topics in accordance with NEPPA’s curriculum.
- Hold class sessions as scheduled.
- Provide clearly organized and understandable instruction with a focus on achieving tangible learning objectives.
- Instruct students in policies, procedures and best-practices necessary for compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Maintain a professional and positive environment with students and members, both in and out of the classroom.
- Assist in the continual evaluation, development and enhancement of curricula
- Submit accurate and complete records and reports in a timely manner, which is critical in providing assessment data for institutional improvement.
- Participate in professional development and continuing education opportunities, including conferences and workshops, that contribute to professional and institutional advancement.
- Maintain professional certifications, designations and credentials.
Experience, Education & Certifications
- Experience in training, teaching, or facilitating professional development with adults.
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field (electrical or mechanical engineering, power systems, occupational safety and health, etc.).
- In lieu of a degree, 6+ years’ experience working in, or consulting with an electric utility may be considered.
- Preferred: Hold a Hoisting and CDL A License, or ability to obtain one within 18 months of employment.
- Preferred: 5+ years’ experience as it relates to OSHA Standards & Safety Compliance, Utility Operations, and/or Engineering.
- Preferred: Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, General Industry or Construction, or ability to get authorized within 18 months of employment.
- Preferred: Additional Safety or Professional Certifications such as, but not limited to:
- Professional Engineer (PE)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
- Safety & Health Specialist (SHS)
- Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong commitment to safe work practices.
- Enthusiasm, creativity and energy in the classroom. Using a teaching style that provides a positive learning experience for students. Ability to communicate effectively as a teacher.
- Professionalism including strong interpersonal skills and communication.
- Knowledge and ability to teach courses associated with all aspects of electrical power systems and safety, for example:
- Substations & Components
- Power Transformers
- System Protection & Equipment
- Metering Safety & Components
- Power Systems
- Underground Distribution
- Detailed knowledge of regulations and standards that apply to electrical distribution, for example:
- Occupational Safety & Health Administration (1910.269 & 1926 Subpart V)
- National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
- American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning and teach a diverse audience.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, nonverbal and written) and problem-solving skills (identification, analysis and resolution).
- Proficiency with computers, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), presentation equipment, and cloud computing.
- Ability to work in a remote setting, and remain accountable to preparation, delivery and reporting requirements.
