A recent report released by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission expressed concern that the Saltstone Disposal Facility at the Savannah River Site may not meet the standards to prevent radiation exposure to the Site's surrounding population in the long term.
A Technical Evaluation Report found that while waste disposal meets the requirements for protection of individuals against inadvertent intrusion, for example through groundwater, the NRC is not convinced that the radiation exposure dosage to the general population would be below the required dose 10,000 years from now.
