With the rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs), electricity providers and grid managers face the critical challenge of effectively managing EV load before it impacts distribution system operations. In response to this pressing need, we are pleased to announce the Electric Vehicle Load Management Programs & Strategies course, taking place on August 10 from 1-5 PM at the Detroit Westin.
This comprehensive training session will equip participants with the knowledge and resources to develop actionable EV programs and plans by exploring available technologies, data, applications, and existing program designs.
Drawing upon the experience gained from delivering programs for major U.S. utilities during the summer of 2022, including over 30 load management events, this course aims to provide valuable insights and lessons learned. Participants will gain a deep understanding of:
1. Technologies and analytics available to manage EVs, including AMI data disaggregation, vehicle telematics, and EV Supply Equipment (EVSE), along with their benefits and limitations.
2. Proven methods for implementing both active load management and behavioral programs, including case studies of existing utility EV load management initiatives and the valuable lessons derived from them.
3. Factors to be considered in program design, such as customer experience, baseline data, sample sizes, adoption rates, and incentives.
4. Essential elements for planning EV programs, including the data and information needs and addressing program performance questions effectively.
5. The demonstration of how load management programs and EV roadmaps based on analytics can support community mobility plans, contribute to carbon reduction goals, and address equity issues.
By attending this course, participants will gain the knowledge and resources to create their own EV load management programs and confidently answer critical questions such as program goals, suitable technologies, appropriate program designs for their customer base, integration with other load management programs and utility objectives, and the most effective incentive structures. "
We recognize the urgent need for utilities and grid managers to stay ahead of EV load management challenges to ensure seamless operations," said Dan Violette, PhD, at Apex Analytics. "The Electric Vehicle Load Management Programs & Strategies course will provide attendees with comprehensive insights and practical strategies to optimize EV programs. This course is a must-attend for professionals responsible for EV program opportunities within their organizations."
This course is highly valuable for electric utility personnel involved in distribution planning and operations, transportation electrification, demand-side management teams, customer engagement staff, as well as program implementers and evaluators.

EV Managed Charging Workshop Series for Utilities.
June 20 and June 27, 2023, 10am to 1130am MT
As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to grow rapidly, utilities are faced with the challenge of managing EV charging effectively while optimizing grid performance and cost efficiency. To address this critical need, Apex Analytics is excited to announce the launch of the EV Managed Charging Workshop Series for Utilities.
This online workshop series, taught by industry experts, will provide utility professionals with comprehensive training on program design, data analysis, load shaping, and analytics for managing EV charging. The workshop series comprises two sessions, each packed with valuable insights and practical knowledge.
Session 1, titled "Program Design: EV Managed Charging and Demand Response," will take place on June 20 from 10am to 11:30am MT. This session will explore various program design options and technology choices that align with utility and customer needs. Participants will gain a deep understanding of technologies used for EV load management, such as electric meter data (AMI) disaggregation, vehicle telematics, device-based telematics, and charger EVSEs. The session will also cover strategies for encouraging behavioral change in charging behavior and the benefits and limitations of different program designs.
Session 2, titled "EV Managed Charging In-field Case Studies," will be held on June 27 from 10am to 11:30am MT. This session will showcase a wide range of real-world EV managed charging programs, highlighting their parameters and use cases. Participants will gain insights into behavioral management, scheduled end-state charging, active and behavioral peak demand response, and peak/off-peak pricing. The session will also delve into the incentives provided to EV drivers, such as discounted electric rates, one-time payments, ongoing monthly payments, event-based rewards, penalties, and warnings. Participants will learn how to use program outcomes to benchmark new initiatives, evaluate program impacts, and develop EV load shapes under various conditions.
"We are thrilled to offer this workshop series to utility professionals who are actively working on managing EV charging and developing load management programs," said Dan Violette, PhD, Strategic Advisor at Apex Analytics. "This training will equip attendees with the necessary knowledge and tools to optimize electric vehicle charging while ensuring grid reliability and cost efficiency. We encourage participants to join both sessions to maximize their learning experience."
The EV Managed Charging Workshop Series is open to utility professionals from various departments, including electric transportation, demand-side management programs and marketing, distribution and system planning, load forecasting, and rate design. While prior knowledge of utility operations would be beneficial, it is not essential for participation.
