Clearway Energy Group (“Clearway”) announced that a new high-performance computing data center is co-located at its Elbow Creek wind farm in Howard County, Texas. The first phase of the data center was energized this year, and the second phase will be completed in 2026.
The colocated data center is nearly matched in size to the Elbow Creek wind project’s nameplate capacity of 122 MW. The colocation of the data center allows computing workloads to benefit from low-cost energy generated on-site.
Clearway partnered with Satoshi Energy, which specializes in the development of colocated load at renewable generation.
“Clearway is excited to power a data center at our Elbow Creek wind project using abundant generation without adding stress to the local grid,” said Valerie Wooley, Senior Vice President of Origination at Clearway. “This project underscores our commitment to developing innovative solutions to power data center loads by leveraging existing infrastructure. We are grateful to Satoshi Energy for their partnership and diligence on the project, which led to a successful outcome at Elbow Creek.”
Colocating energy load and renewable generation enables data centers and other high-energy-demand infrastructure to reduce their impact on the local grid by accessing reliable, low-cost excess electricity generated at the source.
“It was a pleasure working with Clearway’s outstanding team to accelerate site development and commercial structuring for this strategic colocation project,” said Bob Bonner, VP of Development at Satoshi Energy, which provided development and advisory services to Clearway. “This project strengthens our conviction that colocating data centers with power generation is the key to sustainable growth in the industry.”
The Elbow Creek wind project was originally commissioned in 2008 and underwent a repowering in 2019.
