Unicorn Market Systems has launched the AIB Hub, serving as the digital backbone for transferring guarantees of origin across Europe. This modern solution, delivered to the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB), interconnects national registries to ensure the secure, reliable, and auditable transfer of certificates for all energy sources.
A Guarantee of Origin (GO) is an electronic certificate that confirms that a certain portion of produced electricity or gas comes from a certain energy source, such as the sun, wind, water, etc. These certificates help consumers, businesses, and governments demonstrate the origin of the energy they consume.
AIB needed to future-proof its original technical solution, which no longer met growing demands, meaning it needed to develop a new, modern solution. The AIB Hub has now improved its process of ensuring the secure, reliable, and auditable transfer of GOs between individual national registries in Europe.
“AIB Hub is essentially SWIFT for GOs—a central hub that connects European registries and enables the fast and reliable transmission of electricity certificates of origin. We’re proud to have been part of a project with such a real impact on the development of the European energy sector,” says Jan Konrád, Chief Commercial Officer of the Unicorn Systems group of companies.
The new system offers a modern architecture, higher performance, advanced monitoring, and better detection of suspicious transactions. Thanks to its open interface, it also allows for easy integration with external systems, such as national registries. The AIB Hub was developed using the Unicorn Universe Digital-twin Construction Kit, which utilises the modern cloud architecture supported by Unicorn Mobile-First IoT-Ready AI-Boosted Cloud Architecture.
“Working with Unicorn has allowed us to modernise the central system of the growing European market for GOs and ensure its long-term stability, thereby supporting our 41 members to perform their legal mandate efficiently and cost-effectively. The deployment went smoothly, and the new system provides us with greater flexibility and readiness for future integrations. We appreciate the professionalism and expertise of the Unicorn team, said Liesbeth Switten, Secretary General at AIB.
The AIB Hub is directly connected to other European platforms and national GO registries. Many of them use Unicorn’s Certigy product, which helps manage and operate GOs at the national level.
This project confirms Unicorn’s position as a reliable supplier of robust and innovative solutions and products for the energy sector—not only in Europe but in other regions, too.
AIB
The Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) promotes the use of the standardised European Energy Certificate System (EECS), based on structures and procedures that ensure the reliable functioning of international energy certificate systems. The European Energy Certificate System (EECS) is set out in the “EECS Rules” and supporting documents. The AIB’s activities concern all electricity consumers, as the GO (a tool created in a European directive and standardised through the EECS) is the cornerstone for providing reliable information on the origin of electricity supplied to consumers.
