Dive Brief:
- Iowa and South Dakota get more than 25% of their power from wind while seven other states get more than 12% of their electricity from wind, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). The Southeast, however, has next to no wind power.
- Wind farms account for 30% of all new capacity added in the last five years, AWEA said.
- Wind farms produced 4.1% of all the power made in the U.S. last year.
Dive Insight:
AWEA didn't mention that only 1,129 MW of wind was installed last year, down from 12,424 MW in 2012, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The change was caused by the expiration of the federal production tax credit at the end of 2012. The credit was extended and AWEA reports that 12,000 MW of wind capacity is being built. Texas, Iowa and California produced the most wind last year.
