Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is putting construction of a wind turbine manufacturing plant in Fort Smith, Ark., on hold because demand in the U.S. has fallen, the company says.
The decision came after the company's board of directors approved an inventory write-down and related measures connected with Mitsubishi's onshore wind-turbine business
The factory was due to originally start operations in the second half of 2011.
"Since the 2008 banking crisis, demand for wind turbines in the North American market has stagnated, and the commercialization of cheap oil-shale gas and other matters have had a further dampening effect, making it more difficult for MHI to win new contracts," a company statement said.
