EnergySec, which is a public-private partnership funded by the Department of Energy, and nCircle asked 104 security professionals about the vulnerability of smart meters to having false data introduced.
In the survey, done last month, 61% of the respondents said they did not think meter installations have sufficient protection to fend off false-data injections.
EnergySec's purpose is to enhance the cyber security of the electricity infrastructure.
