A sudden surge in the use of electric vehicles without managing the demand pattern for recharging them could crash the grid pretty quickly, PJM Interconnection CEO Terry Boston believes.
"If all of those came home at 5 p.m. and plugged in, we would have a voltage collapse, and I would be seeking other business opportunities very quickly," Boston told a Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission forum at Drexel University, the news website Philly.com reported.
However, Boston said, the PJM distribution network could handle 25 million vehicles with smart-grid controls in place to remotely tell the cars to charge between midnight and 7 a.m.
