Dive Brief:
- Kentucky's largest utilities -- Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities -- want to expand their energy efficiency programs. The PPL Corp. subsidiaries have been able to cut demand by about 330 MW under existing programs.
- As part of the expansion, the utilities want to increase incentives and extend programs to commercial customers who participate in peak demand cycling events, either by installing an energy management system or individual energy demand load-control switches from June through September.
- The utilities asked the Kentucky Public Service Commission for permission to offer 10,000 customers advanced meters, giving them the ability to see their energy use as it happens.
Dive Insight:
Kentucky doesn't have energy efficiency requirements for its utilities so this is a case of how utilities see the value in efficiency and demand response. The state, however, ranks low at 39th in the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's annual state scorecard issued in November.
