LineVision, the leading American provider of transmission grid intelligence solutions, today announced it has joined Utilize, an industry-led coalition working with utilities, states, and policymakers to improve energy affordability by optimizing the utilization of the nation's electric grid. LineVision joins founding members Carrier, Google, Renew Home, Sparkfund, SPAN, Verrus, and Tesla in supporting policies that help utilities meet rising demand from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification more affordably and more quickly.
“Better visibility into the capacity of our grid can help maximize efficiency of the infrastructure we’ve already built, as well as the capital we need to spend to upgrade it,” said Vishal Kapadia, CEO of LineVision. “We’re excited to contribute our transmission expertise to support Utilize’s efforts to increase grid utilization at a time when meeting rising power demand and protecting businesses and communities from the burden of rising electricity costs are critical imperatives.”
Independent research underscores the scale of the opportunity. A recent Duke University analysis of 22 U.S. regional power systems found that the electric grid operates at just 53 percent of capacity on average. It estimated that existing systems could serve 76 to 215 gigawatts of additional demand while remaining below historical peak conditions. A related Stanford University study of the Western U.S. grid found that most transmission lines are carrying only 18 to 52 percent of their available capacity even during peak periods, with the majority clustered around roughly 30 percent utilization.
“When it comes to our transmission system, Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR) represent critical information that can help measure and improve the utilization of our grid to the benefit of all Americans. We’re thrilled to have LineVision and their US market-leading presence join our coalition,” said Ian Magruder, Founder and Executive Director of Utilize Coalition. “At Utilize, we’re focused on creating transparency into and improving utilization across both transmission and distribution, and adding LineVision’s expertise in transmission helps strengthen and broaden our effort.”
LineVision will work alongside fellow coalition members to engage governors, legislatures, and regulators on policies like grid utilization metrics like those recently advanced in Virginia's SB 621 / HB 434 that help states translate research on grid utilization into planning and regulatory practice.
