The number of consumers exercising their right to shop for competitive electricity supplies has grown substantially since 2008 in the 18 states that permit customers to choose their electricity supplier, despite this period being marked by flat electricity demand due to the economic slowdown.
As of the close of 2011, nearly one out of every five kilowatt-hours of electricity in America was supplied by a competitive provider – even though customer choice is still denied to consumers in states representing 56% of total U.S. electricity load.
