When it opened in May 2002, it stood as the largest single renewable energy plant in Nebraska.
Since then, OPPD’s Elk City Station has operated so successfully that it was expanded in 2006, nearly doubling in size from a plant generating 3.2 megawatts (MW) of electricity to one with a total new output of 6.1 MW.
What makes the facility unique is that it operates using methane and other gases given off by decomposing trash at the Douglas County Landfill. Thursday, the OPPD board of directors approved a measure to ensure the plant will continue operating for another five years.
