Dive Brief:
-
Salt River Project (SRP) saw a 25% jump in solar rooftop installations in January compared with a year ago while Arizona Public Service (APS), which has a new $5 a month solar fee, had a roughly 50% drop in installations last month.
-
The growth in SRP's service territory around Phoenix was all residential customers and, in a change, mainly leases.
-
Although APS and SRP, a public power utility, are about the same size, APS has about three times as many customers with solar panels and buys more utility-scale solar.
Dive Insight:
While a month's worth of data isn't enough to draw strong conclusions, it appears that SRP isn't seeing a spillover effect from Arizona's ugly solar debate last year. We'll also keep an eye on solar leasing in SRP's service territory. That could mark a shift that spurs development there.
